This practical workshop covers the process of creating drawings from imagination, using ideas about gesture, informal perspective and using reference material to build imagined ideas from scratch. The workshop will also look at how a range of different artists use imaginative drawing techniques in their work.

This workshop is intended for anyone who is interested in learning more about imaginative drawing. Both beginners and more experienced artists are welcome to join this workshop. It is intended as a broad overview of the principles of imaginative drawing and basic image-making techniques, making these ideas applicable to a wide range of visual arts disciplines.

This is similar to the popular ‘Introduction to Drawing from Imagination’ workshop Lance ran prior to the pandemic and could be considered an updated version of that workshop.
What to Expect

The day will be broken into three main sections, where we start by learning about planning out drawings and devising gestures to pose our figures. This is built on with basic ideas about visual structure and informal perspective techniques. In the final section of the day, we tie these together by looking at how to combine these ideas, refine our drawings and use reference material.

There will be lots of opportunities to draw with exercises that help us practise the ideas in this workshop.

Tutor Lancelot Richardson will be leading the workshop, providing tutored sections and will be on hand to offer assistance throughout the day. The workshop is held in the Draw brighton studio, a purpose built, spacious art studio.

The workshop runs from 10am-5pm on Sunday 2st April, with a 1 hour lunch break from 1-2pm. There will also be extra teabreaks in the day.

You may arrive at 9:45am onwards. When you arrive, please head for the large blue door next to the Managers Office, on the New England Street side of the building. Please ring the number on the door to be let in.

All materials are included in the cost of the workshop. Attendees are welcome to bring their own drawing materials and may want to bring a folder to put completed drawings into at the end.
Running of the Session and Accesibility

When you arrive at the building, head to the front door next to the building manager's office. The doors are locked at the weekend, so please call the phone number on the door to be let in.

The building has a wheelchair ramp, lifts and accessible toilets. Unfortunately, the building does not provide parking. If you have access needs, please get in touch so we can help you enjoy life classes.
Illness and Covid

Please do not attend this workshop if you have covid, flu, are otherwise infectious or showing similar symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, fever, etc. You will receive a refund as well as our appreciation! Please get in touch ASAP so your place on the workshop can be offered to someone else.

The studio has an industrial grade air filter and is well ventilated with high ceilings.
