Essential: British Sign Language (BSL) level 2 or above, supporting a young client with learning difficulties and epilepsy, and experience working in a family setting. Non-smoker/vaper. *This role is open to female applicants only.
Start Date: ASAP
Days & Hours: Three Days a week, 10.00 am to 2.00pm (There can be flexibility on the specific days)

About this client/child:
Melissa aged 18 enjoys baking, Harry Potter, watching theatre shows and especially, spending time with her dogs. She lives at home with her parents and has an incredibly close relationship with her mum. Melissa has moderate learning difficulties, hearing loss for which she wears cochlear implants, epilepsy, and dyspraxia. While Melissa can use speech, this can be quite difficult for others to understand so she also uses British Sign Language (BSL). Melissa is very able and capable but will require some prompting with her personal care. She has very little risk awareness of danger so always requires supervision.
Overview of role:
As Melissa’s BSL Support Worker you will be assisting her in the home and continuing to promote her life skills and independence. This could range from making food together and engaging in fun activities like arts and crafts. Melissa loves food and her appetite doesn’t always switch off so she will need close observation with food. Once a relationship has been formed outings into the community will be slowly introduced. Whilst Melissa lacks the awareness of danger, she is very responsive and takes guidance well. When out and about you will be responsible for interpreting for Melissa. The role offers £25.00 during weekdays and £30.00 Gross Per Hour during weekends.
Who this job would suit:
We are looking for a Support Worker who has BSL Level 2 or above and has prior experience working with young clients with learning difficulties. You should also have experience working in a family setting. Up until now, Melissa’s mum has been her main carer so the right person will need to be patient and understand that this is a big change for the family.

This will be a great opportunity for someone interested in continuing with their BSL training. Melissa’s mum is trained to Level 3 so you will be working amongst people trained to a high level. Bespoke training is available from the OT already in place and will also be available from the physio and SALT team once they have been appointed.
