Non-departmental Public Body Job summaryAn organisation that delivers government funding to the public sector to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and lower energy bills, is looking to recruit a Data Protection Officer to join their Governance function. The successful applicant will take the day-to-day lead on data protection, public information rights and confidentiality issues, with the primary focus of ensuring that information rights legal and other requirements arising from public access to information, data protection and third- party privacy rights are complied with, offering advice and support to the organisation as a public body. My client is looking for someone who has experience of data information handling and rights and is a team player, pays close attention to detail and has the personal motivation to perform the role to the highest standards. You are punctual, flexible and responsive in how you approach your work. You will also work collaboratively across teams to support a proactive approach to data protection and FOI across the business.Your new role
To advise the company on relevant legislation and compliance requirements including the Freedom of Information Act, UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act, and guidance from the ICOs office to ensure the company's compliance with its statutory duties and obligations.To serve as the company's statutorily required Data Protection Officer.To assist the Governance Manager in advising the company on existing information governance and data protection policies and procedures. This will involve research, drafting responses to information and subject access requests.To review, amend or draft any relevant documents. These will include policies, procedures, guidance, notices, contracts and data sharing arrangements/clauses.To deal with and record data and confidentiality breaches, mitigating the consequences of these and communicating lessons learned. including the identification of risks and advice to manage and mitigate risks.To act as a point of escalation for colleagues in the processing of complex or novel information requests, or those requiring sensitive consideration from senior members of society, such as MPs.To make recommendations to the management team as appropriate with respect to such matters.To act as the first point of contact with the ICO and on information requests, data breaches and administrative matters.To provide advice in respect of Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and to monitor performance under these.To engage confidently and effectively with all areas of the organisation, as well as with external stakeholders, demonstrating a clear understanding of how to manage data protection and privacy information, as well as drive improvement in all areas of information management.To supervise and harmonise the work of colleagues who are responding to the data issues arising.Assist with briefings/training sessions to the colleagues to promote awareness of privacy issues and data protection as required,To liaise where necessary with corresponding officers in DESNZ (or other relevant organisations) to ensure that response management of data and response to issues arising complies with the requirements of a non-departmental public body.To carry out any other duties as required to support governance as assigned by the Director of Finance and Resources/Governance Manager.Ensure the values of the company are demonstrated in all aspects of your work.To demonstrate a commitment to equality and diversity. Experience required
Experience of working in Data Protection/ Information Governance sphere.Understanding of, and experience in, advising on information rights legislation including Freedom of Information Act 2000, GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.Experience of drafting and reviewing Information Sharing Agreements and ensuring these are compliant with GDPR obligations.Experience of handling information and business affairs with secrecy and confidentiality as appropriate (maintaining objective independence).Familiarity with privacy and security risk assessment and best practices, privacy certifications/seals, and information security standards certifications.Understanding of local and central government.Sound knowledge and understanding of the principles of good records management and practice. What you'll get in returnThis is a full-time permanent contract paying GBP40,000 - GBP45,000. Hybrid working is in place, where you will be expected to work in London two days per week.
