A rare vintage Willy Guhl fibre cement Bowl or Vasque planter that is well aged with some attractive weathering, patina, and moss on it’s surfaces.

Acquired from an antique dealer in Chatillon sur Seine, this came from a clearance of a solicitor’s office and had apparently been used by a doorway since the 1950s.
(We currently have a number of Willy Guhl planters listed from France).

If you are looking at these you probably know all about them and their iconic status.
However, if not, they are often described as some of the best-designed planters of all time and come courtesy of Swiss furniture designer Willy Guhl.
Born in Stein am Rhein in 1915, Guhl was one of the first industrial designers in Switzerland. He trained as a carpenter before studying at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, where he later went on to teach for 39 years, retiring in 1980.
Guhl first made his mark by experimenting with new materials and creating pieces in simple, yet elegant forms. He designed a wide range of objects and furnishings, from chairs to door handles, church pews and vases.
In 1951, the Swiss company Eternit commissioned Guhl to create a line of attractive and durable planters, which can be used indoors or out. These planters were made using fibre concrete or fibre cement which enabled numerous shaped designs which are surprisingly light.
Internet research reveals this to be a tilting bowl planter produced under the VASQUE line.

In very good sound condition with wear and knocks consistent with it’s age and use - please see photos for condition.

There is wear but the only real chip I can find is to the edge of the base. I can find no cracks - see photos

It has maker’s marks to the bottom interior of the bowl - see photos.

There are three drainage holes.

Nicely aged with peeling paint and a good coating of moss and lichen formed.

Comes in two parts with the bowl resting on the footed base.

Adjusts simply by tilting if required.

Not weighed but estimated at 17 kg.
