The ISIS neutron and muon source, based at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, is a world–leading research centre that generates beams of neutrons and muons to study the atomic–level properties of materials, from soap films to superconductors, engineering to earth science, advanced battery components to biomolecules. ISIS has over 30 research instruments serving an international community of 3000 scientists. Each year around 600 science papers are published based on ISIS research. ISIS has an ongoing programme to increase its capacity and capability which will lead to growth in publications and other outputs.
About the role:
Maintaining a strong multi–disciplinary neutron and muon user community is vital to the success of ISIS. As part of the impact and engagement team you will work with ISIS scientists and users, taking responsibility for ISIS' website, identifying, sourcing and writing science highlights and case studies for a range of audiences. You will also look after our social media channels and wider online presence and contribute to the development of print publications for current and potential users in both academia and industry, in line with our digital content, and contribute to STFC and UKRI–wide publications and digital content.
The future of the neutron community depends on students, both visiting and working at the facility. You oversee our active student engagement programme, coordinating visits, raising the profile of our sandwich, vacation and graduate schemes and supporting a range of postgraduate training opportunities, in collaboration with colleagues across the Harwell Campus.
You may be a scientist with a strong interest in neutron research who would like to move into science communication, or you may have experience in communications and wish to gain further skills at a world–class science facility. You will have strong communication skills, and the ability to quickly build strong relationships with our user community and university partners. Reporting to the ISIS Head of Impact and Engagement you will also look for opportunities to promote and represent ISIS at events. You will have excellent writing, editing and proof reading skills, and a desire to enhance your experience through developing communication channels with our user community and others in an accessible manner.
There may also be opportunities within the role to take on the project management of major events, ensuring these are well planned, managed and delivered in a consistent fashion.

You will need to have excellent communications skills, demonstrated in a scientific environment. You will need some experience of web writing or publication production, event organization and social media in an organizational context.
You will need excellent writing, editing and proof reading skills. You will also need to be highly organised, enthusiastic, capable of taking projects from initial idea to finished product and be able to work independently and as part of a team. You will need to be flexible, working on a diverse range of activities with competing time frames, able to manage your own time and delegate where necessary.
Some UK travel may be required
