Estate Worker / Gardener
Clint is a family home and estate near Stenton in rural East Lothian. The house is in a secluded valley with a large mature garden. We manage a 75ha mixed farm, some hill ground, and commercial and broadleaf forestry.
We are looking for one employee who will keep on top of all Estate Activities. This will include work in the garden at Clint House and outside on the farm and in the woods. Personality and willingness to get on with jobs needing done is more important than particular experience.
The new employee will work on the following:
Work in the garden – lawn mowing at least one day per week in the summer; pruning fruit trees; watering; maintenance of rhododendron collection. Possible work in vegetable garden. Greenhouse and shed maintenance.
Work in the house – maintenance where skills allow; filling log baskets; taking out bins; clearing blocked drains and gutters.
Work on the farm – fence and dyke repairs, trough maintenance, etc.
Occasional stock work with our small beltie herd and sheep (both are herds are kept for conservation grazing, not intensive meat rearing).
Work in the woods – processing and delivering windblown and thinned trees for firewood sales and our small bandsaw mill.
Working with contractors doing other work on the Estate. This will range from plumbers, electricians and painters through to civils and forestry contractors.
Other project work – there is always stuff needing done: understanding private water supply, vermin control, occasional picking up for family shoot days, etc. The right person will be able to look around and see what needs to be done.
The ideal candidate will be physically fit and prepared to commit absolutely to a new role. There is a three-bedroom tied cottage with large garden available to applicants, otherwise you would need transport to get to EH42 1TQ each day and in any case must have a full driving licence. Part-time cleaning or housekeeping work would be available for the right candidate’s partner.
Experience with one or more of the following would be desirable but not necessary. Enthusiasm, fitness and ability to learn are just as important.

This is an exciting time to join the estate. Charlie is taking over from his parents and there are various interesting directions possible. Whoever joins as our new employee will have a big influence on where the estate goes in the coming decades. Ideally we’re looking for someone who will be at Clint for many years to come.
Salary will be in the region of £15,000 - £25,000 per year depending on experience and whether you want to live in the tied house.
