RARE - A. GRAIZELY HEBDOMAS 8 DAYS EARLY BREVET 2, 88 GUN METAL POCKET WATCH, c. 1890
Up for sale today is a rare and historical A. Graizely - La Ferriere 8 day pocket watch, later known as \"HEBDOMAS\".
Notice, aside the \"8 JOURS\" to the movement huge spring cover, there's no mention of Hebdomas.
Instead you will notice BREVET # 2 and 88 stamped under the balance on main plate and to the spring cover.
The development of long power reserve watches was the pursuit of many historical watch houses. By the late 1890's and early 1900's you will find a plethora of calibers, usually in oversized (goliath) cases, well over 60mm and anywhere towards 150mm. (study: Douard 8 day, Doxa 8 day, Omega 8 day, Eterna 8 day).
However, \"HEBDOMAS\" is actually the earliest 8 DAY mass produced pocket watch with a winding and setting mechanism thru the crown.
On a side note, prior to the Hebdomas, Arthur Graizely did not stood out as a manufacturer. It was actually the creation of Irénée Aubry that later went in business with Graizely.
I will not spoil the ownership exchange by documenting the plot here, but if you came this far, i suggest start digging, as its quite the puzzling story worth reading.
The original polychrome enamel dial is in fair condition as it has a minor chip on the side, at 9 position and one at 8.
Dial features blue Roman numerals and is fitted with a lovely pair of gilt Louis XVI gilt hands, in good condition.
The low dome mineral crystal is in very good condition.
Lovely gun metal case in original condition. Case opens and closes fine with a crisp sound.
The case shows various age related marks or wear, but remains in good overall condition.
Early nickel finish cal. 19\" - 8 day movement, signed G.A. (Arthur Graizely) - LA FERRIERE - SWISS MADE, 8 JOURS, (BREVET) No. 2, No. 88.
As it was the practice, only the earliest specimens carry brevet numbers.
Diameter of the watch excluding the pendant is ~51 mm. Including pendant ~73 mm. Thickness is ~16.60 mm.
The watch is in working condition, however service history is unknown. I would mend plete service before any use.
Power reserve not tested either.
