Essential: Experience working with children with special educational needs (SEN) and autism, classroom experience. Good IT skills.
Desirable: Level 2 or 3 Cert Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools, or Level 3 Dip Childcare & Education (or equivalent), or experience working with children in an educational setting.
Start Date: ASAP!
Days & Hours: Term-time only, Monday to Friday 32.5 hours a week. 8.30am to 3.15pm

About this client/child:
Tom, 10, is an inquisitive, engaging, and sensitive boy. He loves music, adapted football, and watching TV, his particular favourites are currently Sonic Hedgehog and Teletubbies! Tom has mild cerebral palsy that affects his left side more than his right, and he is on the autistic spectrum. He has a recent diagnosis of Crohn’s disease. Tom is mobile but uses a wheelchair for some trips to stop him from starting an activity tired (going to the park or walking from the car to school for example). Tom likes to do his own thing and is quite happy to be on the outside looking in. Tom can get quite fixed on certain ideas and find it difficult to move forward. Routine and structure are important for Tom. If he becomes overwhelmed, he uses music on his headphones to self-regulate and calm down. He can take things very literally, and said himself, that because of his autism, he has no filter!
Overview of role:
As Tom’s Teaching Assistant (TA), you will support him at school to help create the very best environment for him. His mum takes him to and from school so you will meet them beforehand for a brief handover. Tom can be reserved at school (the opposite of how he is at home) and relies on people to notice him. As his TA, you’ll get to know and understand his specific needs; gently encourage him to join in, and help keep him on task, which might be as simple as making sure he has his coat done up when it’s cold, or other seemingly small things that can feel for Tom too much to handle. Tom is toilet trained, but if he is having a Crohn’s flare-up, he may need assistance to quickly get to the toilet and to help him wipe himself clean. You will help implement his therapies into his daily routine including physio and Occupational Therapy. This is a term-time-only position. Up to £19,012.00 gross per annum

The perfect person for this job will be able to hit the ground running! You will be positive, patient, and warm, but also confident to positively encourage Tom when appropriate. You’ll be a great team player and communicator, able to feedback information to Tom’s parents and communicate with teachers and therapists. This role is open to both male and female applicants.
